Upazila authorities in Dewanganj, Jamalpur, have excavated a drainage canal to relieve waterlogging on roughly 5,000 acres of farmland in the upazila’s Bahadurabad union. Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shah Zahurul Hossain inaugurated the excavation work Monday afternoon, August 17, in the upazila’s Polakandi area.

Local farmers and residents said roughly 5,000 acres of farmland, stretching from Polakandi through Nazirpur to Jhalorchar, had been waterlogged for the past eight to ten years. Drainage had been blocked because the channel connecting Polakandi canal to the Brahmaputra River had silted up, leaving the land uncultivable for more than a decade. With the canal now excavated, water will drain quickly, opening the way for rice, corn, mustard, and jute cultivation.

Also present at the inauguration were Bahadurabad Union Parishad Chairman Md Shahjahan Mia and upazila and union BNP leaders and activists.

UNO Shah Zahurul Hossain said: “The canal was excavated to reduce local farmers’ hardship and in the public interest. This will end the long-standing waterlogging problem and multiply agricultural production across this vast area.”
