The Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat has been declared vacant after its MP, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, was elected the country’s 23rd president.
The move was announced Saturday, August 22, in a notice signed by Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, secretary of the Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat’s Legislative Support Wing, Legislation Branch-2.
The notice said that as Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the 13th Jatiya Sangsad’s MP elected from constituency 3, Thakurgaon-1, assumed the office of president on Friday, August 21, the seat became vacant from the date he assumed that office, under Article 50(4) of the constitution.
An order has been issued for the notice to be published immediately in an extraordinary gazette by the government press. A copy of the notification has also been sent to the senior secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat so that the necessary arrangements can be made for a by-election in the now-vacant seat.
Copies were simultaneously sent to the Cabinet Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Office, the offices of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, the office of the Leader of the Opposition, and other relevant offices for information and necessary action.
