Public statements and social media posts by US President Donald Trump are uniting the Iranian people rather than sowing division, says Abbas Khamayar, a professor of international relations in Tehran and a former diplomat. Rather than creating rifts, he says, Trump’s posts are instead making Iranians more unified.
He made the comments in an interview with Al Jazeera. Khamayar said reports of a severe energy crisis in Iran are being exaggerated in coverage. Addressing reports of long lines of cars at petrol pumps in the capital, Tehran, he said the wait does not exceed half an hour at most, and that this is nothing more than an ordinary, everyday scene.
He also noted that, because of low prices and easy availability, per capita fuel consumption in Iran is roughly five times the global average. Highlighting the country’s domestic political situation, Khamayar said the huge turnout at various events, including the funeral of former Supreme Leader Khamenei, proves that Iranian society always unites in the face of any external challenge or foreign attack.
He claimed that Trump’s statements and social media posts, intended to sow division among Iranians through psychological warfare or intimidation, have failed and are instead producing the opposite effect. He further said that despite the United States’ powerful military capability, it has failed to translate that into strategic success.
Washington’s frequent shifts in objectives, he said, are clear evidence of an inconsistent and disorganized strategy. This shortsighted policy, the former diplomat said, has severely damaged the United States’ image in the eyes of the world.
