Police have filed a chargesheet in court against 29 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, in a case over the fatal shooting of Abdur Rahman Jisan in the capital’s Jatrabari, Matuail area during the July mass uprising.
Confirming the matter Sunday afternoon, Jatrabari police station court’s general registration branch officer, police sub-inspector Mohiuddin Chowdhury, said the case’s investigating officer, Jatrabari police station sub-inspector (SI) Kawsar Hossain, submitted the chargesheet in court on July 8. A hearing on accepting the chargesheet has been scheduled for October 6.
Besides Sheikh Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed Joy, notable accused in the case include former prime minister’s defense adviser Maj. Gen. (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, former prime minister’s adviser Salman F Rahman, general secretary of the now-banned Awami League and former bridges minister Obaidul Quader, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former local government minister Tajul Islam, former ministers Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu, Anisul Haq and Jahangir Kabir Nanak, former MPs Kazi Monirul Islam Monu and Mashiur Rahman Sajal, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former Dhaka DB chief Harun Or Rashid, former RAB director general Harun Or Rashid, former additional commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar, and former Jatrabari police station OC Abul Hasan.
The chargesheet states that at a meeting of the 14-party alliance at Ganabhaban on July 19, chaired by Sheikh Hasina, a decision was made to suppress the protesting students and the public. It says the decision was then carried out with the participation of the other accused, based on Sheikh Hasina’s directives and messages sent by Sajeeb Wazed Joy from abroad.
The chargesheet further states that senior police and RAB officials at the time directed subordinate officers to suppress the movement. On their orders, a large number of police were deployed in the Jatrabari area on July 20. The chargesheet alleges that a section of local Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League leaders and activists then took part in armed attacks on the protesters.
The case alleges that Jisan took part in the movement in the capital’s Jatrabari police station area, in Matuail, on July 20, 2024. That day, Jisan was distributing water to protesters. He was killed in gunfire from the accused. His father, Babul Mia, filed a murder case over the incident on August 25, 2024.
