Abu Baker Majumder is set to become president and Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury general secretary of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, the student wing of the National Citizens Party (NCP). The organisation’s first national council since its founding two years ago is being held today, Saturday, where leadership of Chhatra Shakti may pass to Baker and Tahmid. This information was gathered from conversations with several councillors and related sources.
Abu Baker Majumder currently serves as Chhatra Shakti’s general secretary. He previously served as convener of the organisation’s earlier incarnation, Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (Bagchhas). Tahmid Al Mudassir serves as president of the organisation’s Dhaka University unit. Party sources say the two are the clear frontrunners for Chhatra Shakti’s top two posts and have a strong chance of being elected.
Chhatra Shakti’s election commission published the final candidate list on September 9. According to the list, Abu Baker Majumder and Mahfuz Khan are contesting for president. Candidates for general secretary are Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury, Limon Hasan and Mahfuzur Rahman. For organising secretary, candidates include Abu Towhid Md Siam, Shyamoli Sultana Jedni and Zahirul Islam.
For president of Chhatra Shakti’s Dhaka University unit, Hasib Al Islam and Sakibul Islam are in contention, while Mohammad Sakib and Raihan Ferdous are contenders for general secretary. Excitement is building among the organisation’s leaders and activists ahead of the first council of both the central body and the Dhaka University unit. They expect that electing leadership through a democratic council process will strengthen the organisational structure and produce capable, credible leadership in the future.
Chhatra Shakti press and media secretary Zaber Bin Noor said the council will feature councillor voting, discussion sessions, cultural events, a rally and other programmes throughout the day. The Dhaka University unit’s first council will also be held the same day. The day-long event will take place in front of Dhaka University’s Raju Sculpture. NCP convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam will attend as chief guest, along with all NCP MPs and senior leaders.
According to the schedule, the event will begin with registration at 9am. Councillor voting will run from 10am to noon. Delegates from both committees — more than 200 in total — will elect new leadership for their respective units through the vote. After a lunch and prayer break, a discussion session will be held around 2pm. A rally will begin at 5pm, followed by a cultural programme at 7pm.
NCP’s student wing, formed by young people who led the July mass uprising, was first launched in February 2025 as Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (Bagchhas). Formed by a section of former coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, the organisation failed to generate the expected response, and even suffered a rout in the DUCSU election. Efforts were then made to restructure it.
Eight months later, on October 23, 2025, the organisation was renamed Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, with Zahid Ahsan made president. When he resigned on September 2 citing personal reasons, senior vice-president Ahsan Labib was given charge as acting president.
