Hundreds of thousands of people participated in a mourning procession for Iran’s former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran on Monday (July 6), Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported.
Roads along the designated procession route were packed from dawn, IRIB said. Participants carried Iranian national flags and portraits of Khamenei while chanting slogans expressing national unity and devotion to the late leader’s ideals.
People from all walks of life — men and women, young and old — joined the procession to pay their final respects. Civilian and military officials also participated. The atmosphere was marked by grief, prayers, and mourning songs, IRIB reported.
After the Tehran procession, funeral prayers and mourning ceremonies are scheduled in Qom on Tuesday and in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala on Wednesday. On Thursday, Khamenei will be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine complex in Mashhad following a final funeral prayer.
