Fake sub-inspector detained in Kotchandpur

Police in Kotchandpur, Jhenaidah, have detained a man named Rakibul Hasan, 30, on allegations of throwing his weight around the area while posing as a sub-inspector (SI) of the National Security Intelligence (NSI).

He was detained around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday (Sept. 8) from Talsar Bazar in Kushna union of the upazila.

Rakibul Hasan is a resident of Shalkopa village in the upazila and the son of Md. Mohsin Ali of the same village.

According to police and local sources, Hasan had previously gone to Talsar Bazar and introduced himself as an NSI sub-inspector. Locals allege that he behaved rudely toward various people during these visits and took improper advantage of the situation whenever he saw an opportunity.

On Tuesday, locals grew suspicious again as he identified himself as an NSI official in the same manner. They subsequently reported the matter to the officer in charge of the Talsar police camp.

Upon receiving the report, police went to the scene and questioned Hasan. Inconsistencies in his statements during questioning deepened police suspicion, and he was subsequently detained and taken to the camp.

Local residents said it was concerning that someone could use the identity of a key government intelligence agency to influence or harass ordinary people. They demanded an investigation into the detained man’s real identity, his purpose in using the NSI identity, and whether he had taken any improper benefit from anyone.

The veracity of the allegations against Hasan, however, remains under investigation, and he cannot be considered guilty unless they are proven.

Police said the detained man is being questioned, and further action will be taken after verifying his identity and activities and completing the necessary legal process.
