Frequent load-shedding and power outages have made life difficult across Kushtia. Residents are suffering even more because there is no fixed schedule for the outages.

MP Mufti Amir Hamza of the Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency visited the local WZPDCL office at about 11am on Wednesday to enquire about the frequent load-shedding. He held a discussion with officials in the supervisor engineer’s conference room at the WZPDCL Kushtia office in Aruapara.

Supervising engineer Jahan-e-Shabnam said the district’s daytime electricity demand was 150 to 160 megawatts, but supply was 100 to 105 megawatts. At night, demand was 180 megawatts while supply was 100 to 115 megawatts. Load-shedding was occurring because national power generation was 4,000 megawatts below demand. She could not say when the electricity system would return to normal.

Amir Hamza told officials: “Load-shedding is a national problem in the current situation. I hope it will return to normal soon. But officials of the power department must remain sincere in performing their duties during this crisis.”

Urging special care over phantom bills, he said: “We must ensure that people are not deceived or harassed in any way.”

He heard from officials about several issues and said he would raise the need to increase Kushtia’s power allocation and ensure supply to industrial areas at the next session of parliament.

“Kushtia has many large industrial plants, as well as a medical college hospital and a 250-bed general hospital. Considering the needs of patients, the district’s electricity allocation must be increased and a 24-hour uninterrupted supply ensured. If necessary, I will inform the power minister,” he said.

WZPDCL Kushtia executive engineers (Sales and Distribution-1) Amzad Hossain and (Sales and Distribution-2) Anupam Chakraborty, former Kushtia Jamaat secretary Professor Suzauddin Zowarddar and assistant secretary Mominul Islam were present.
