A woman in Karimganj, Kishoreganj, has been accused of killing her own mother to seize disputed land and then framing a neighbor in a murder case. Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has solved the killing three and a half years after it occurred.
The woman, who was the complainant in the case filed over the killing, has been arrested. She was sent to jail after giving a confessional statement in court.
The accused woman is Champa Akter, 48, wife of Foyez Uddin of Sindripara village in Karimganj upazila’s Noabad union. She is the daughter of the victim, Halima, and was the complainant in the murder case filed over her mother’s death.
PBI Additional Superintendent of Police Md Abdullah Al Masud disclosed this information at a press conference held at the PBI office in Kishoreganj on Thursday, August 20.
According to PBI, 65-year-old Halima was asleep at her home in Sindripara village on the night of March 13, 2023. Her body was recovered the next day from a fallow plot of land roughly 300 yards from her home. Her daughter, Champa Akter, filed a murder case over the killing, naming neighbor Billal and several others as accused. Police first investigated the case before it was transferred to PBI.
During the investigation, PBI found the role of the complainant, Champa, suspicious after analyzing digital evidence, circumstantial clues and witness testimony. The agency said that when questioned, she confessed to her own involvement in the killing. She was subsequently arrested.
According to PBI, Halima was killed in a premeditated act of revenge, with the intent of framing neighbors in a murder case and seizing the disputed land.
The press conference disclosed that Champa Akter gave a confessional statement in court on August 18 under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. After the statement, the court ordered her sent to jail.
PBI said an investigation is under way to determine whether anyone else was involved in the killing.
Police inspectors Ashraful Alam, Khairul Bashar and Nabi Hossain, along with other PBI officials, were present at the press conference.
