International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam has said there are concerns about sabotage surrounding the tribunal’s ongoing trial process. He said tribunal security personnel have been put on alert after the movements and activities of some accused appeared suspicious. The chief prosecutor made the remarks Sunday responding to journalists’ questions at a briefing at his office at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Aminul Islam said, “The movements and activities of some of the accused have appeared suspicious to us. We have some confidential information suggesting they could carry out some form of sabotage or subversive act.”
He said the prosecution is working after carefully weighing these matters. Security personnel concerned have been put on alert to strengthen tribunal security, and every activity inside and outside the tribunal is being kept under surveillance. He said if anyone attempts any subversive activity, it will prove self-destructive for them. The chief prosecutor said that any such malicious intent, or any other scheme by an offender, would likewise be a self-destructive decision on their part.
The International Crimes Tribunal’s investigation agency is investigating crimes against humanity based on complaints filed by Mayer Daak, an organization of relatives of victims of enforced disappearance. Members of 55 families of the disappeared came to the chief prosecutor’s office Sunday, where their statements are due to be taken.
Aminul Islam said the activities of some accused individuals increased after the investigation began based on these families’ complaints. Because of this, law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant while also giving importance to the security of the families of enforced-disappearance victims.
He said the authorities need to keep an eye on those being tried at the tribunal, while also taking seriously the security of every family of the disappeared. The chief prosecutor further said those involved in enforced disappearances are extremely powerful, and the prosecution remains on alert with this in mind. He said victims’ family members are also being asked to remain vigilant.
