Two cases have been filed over the torture-killing of a man named Habib, who was hung upside down and beaten on suspicion of cattle theft in Badurgachha village, Barobazar, Kaliganj upazila, Jhenaidah. Both cases name more than 200 unidentified people as accused. Police have not yet made any arrests since the cases were filed.
According to police sources, the first case, over the alleged cattle theft, was filed by Nilufa Yasmin, a homemaker from Badurgachha village. It names several unidentified individuals as accused.
The second case was filed by Jahangir Hossain, a resident of the Arappur area of Jessore town and brother of Sumon, who was critically injured in the mob beating. This case also names more than 200 unidentified people as accused.
SI Abul Kalam Azad of the Barobazar police outpost, under Kaliganj police station, has been assigned to investigate both cases.
According to local and police sources, local residents apprehended Habib and Sumon early Friday morning at the home of widow Nilufa Begum in Badurgachha village on suspicion of cattle theft. An enraged crowd then tied their hands and feet, hung them upside down from a bamboo pole and beat them. Habib died at the scene. Sumon was critically injured.
Acting on the news, police recovered Habib’s body from the scene Saturday morning and sent it to the morgue at Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Sumon, in critical condition, was rescued at the same time and admitted to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
On the cases and the investigation, Kaliganj police station OC Kabir Hossain said two cases have been filed over the mob-beating incident. An investigation is under way to identify those involved, he said, and anyone found to have been involved will be brought to justice.
