Fifteen injured as LPG tanker and bus collide head-on in Ishwardi

Fifteen passengers have been injured in a head-on collision between an LPG tanker and a passenger bus in Ishwardi, Pabna. One of the injured was transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital in a serious condition. No one was killed.

The crash happened on Friday morning, Aug 14, near the Green City residential area of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, at the Natunhat roundabout in Sahapur union of the upazila.

Police and witnesses said a Green Express bus was travelling from Shailkupa in Kushtia to Dhaka with passengers on board. As it reached the Natunhat roundabout it collided head-on with an LPG tanker coming from the opposite direction, crushing the front of both vehicles.

Six women and nine men on the bus were injured. Local residents took them to the Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex.

Dr Shobhon Pal, Ishwardi upazila health and family planning officer, said 15 injured people were brought to the hospital. One was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment because of the seriousness of their condition. The others were being treated at the hospital.

The driver and helper of the LPG tanker fled the scene after the crash.

Green Express bus driver Rubel Hossain said: “I was travelling from Shailkupa in Kushtia to Dhaka with passengers. When we reached the roundabout there was a head-on collision with an LPG tanker coming down the opposite lane. Several passengers were injured. But no one was killed in the incident.”

Md Nannu Khan, in charge of Pakshey highway police, said the head-on collision between the passenger bus and the LPG tanker took place in the morning. Preliminary information indicated the crash happened because the tanker was in the wrong lane. The injured were rescued and sent to hospital, and the tanker’s driver and helper fled after the crash.

He said both vehicles had been taken into police custody and that the necessary legal steps were being processed.
