NATO has said it will remain prepared to defend all member states, following a report that Iran had considered striking US military installations in Europe if President Donald Trump escalates the war further.
A NATO official said Wednesday that the alliance would take all necessary steps to counter any kind of threat to any of its members.
He said: “Earlier this year, our air defense systems successfully intercepted ballistic missiles fired from Iran toward Turkey in four separate incidents. This demonstrated that our deterrence and defense systems are strong and effective.”
NATO’s warning came after a Financial Times report on what kind of retaliatory steps Tehran might take if the Trump administration further escalates military activity against Iran.
The United States maintains military bases and troop deployments in various countries across Europe. As a result, any potential Iranian attack on US military installations in Europe could also affect the security of NATO members.
