Pakistan’s former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has met his sister, Noreen Niazi, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for the first time this year. The meeting took place at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court had ordered that imprisoned Imran Khan be given the opportunity for weekly visits with family members. Following that court order, family members were able to meet with him.
Imran Khan, jailed at Adiala Jail since 2023, faces multiple cases against him. He is currently serving a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.
According to a report in Dawn, Imran’s sister Noreen Niazi met with him for the first time this year. They were able to speak for roughly 15 minutes. Citing jail sources, the report said the meeting took place in the prison’s conference room, during which they discussed Imran’s physical condition and other matters.
Noreen also informed her brother about an earlier Supreme Court order directing that Imran Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination.
No further details of the meeting were disclosed. The Supreme Court’s order had warned the relevant parties that the visitation privilege granted to Imran Khan could be withdrawn if used for political purposes.
Imran’s two other sisters, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan, and his cousin Qasim Zaman, were not granted permission to meet with him. Political leaders from his party were also not given the opportunity to visit.
Meeting with his wife
Separately, Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, also met with members of her family in a prison conference room on Tuesday. Citing jail sources, a report in the Express Tribune said the meeting between Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi lasted roughly 30 to 35 minutes.
Bushra Bibi had earlier met with her children, Musa and Mubasharra Maneka, and her sister-in-law, Mehrunnisa. That meeting lasted roughly 40 minutes.
Musa and Mubasharra are Bushra Bibi’s children from her first marriage. She married Imran Khan after that marriage ended in divorce.
Pakistan’s top court had earlier directed the government to transfer Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for treatment within two days. It also ordered that he be kept there until September 16.
