Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast across northern and northeastern Bangladesh and upstream areas of India during the next 48 hours, raising the risk of fresh flooding as several major rivers rise rapidly.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre of the Bangladesh Water Development Board issued the forecast in its latest report Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The center said low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Netrokona, Sherpur and Mymensingh could experience short-term flooding and waterlogging.

The Kushiyara River was already flowing above the danger level at Fenchuganj in Sylhet, the board said. Water levels in the Surma and Kushiyara rivers could rise further over the next 72 hours, threatening low-lying riverside areas in Sylhet and Sunamganj.

The Teesta and Dudhkumar rivers could cross danger levels at several points during the next 48 hours, potentially inundating low-lying riverside areas in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha. The Dharla River could approach its warning level during the same period.

The center said Brahmaputra-Jamuna river levels could continue rising over the next five days, with water potentially approaching warning levels in parts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogura.

Ganges-Padma river levels are expected to remain broadly stable for the next two days before rising during the following three days.

Water in the Someshwari, Kangsha and Bhugai rivers could also rise rapidly. The Someshwari could cross the danger level in parts of Netrokona within 24 to 48 hours, while the Bhugai and Kangsha could reach warning levels and cause temporary flooding in low-lying areas of Sherpur, Mymensingh and Netrokona.

The center said heavy rain in Rangpur, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions and upstream India could keep northern and northeastern rivers rising. Residents of vulnerable areas were advised to remain alert.
