The International Crimes Tribunal prosecution is working to complete trials in killing cases linked to the July mass uprising within a year, Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said.

Speaking at a news conference Tuesday, Aug. 4, Islam said the proceedings were following international standards and would not be rushed.

He said six trials had been completed since the International Crimes Tribunal was established in August 2024. Although cases could be concluded faster, doing so could raise questions about the transparency and credibility of the process, he said.

The tribunal currently has 20 July-related cases pending, and prosecutors are working to resolve them within the next year, Islam said. Preparations are also underway for appeal hearings.

On bringing Sheikh Hasina back to Bangladesh, Islam said where she was or was not making speeches was not the tribunal’s central concern. He said the tribunal’s responsibility was to advance the legal process for her return so court judgments could be enforced, adding that enforcement could be delayed if she could not be brought back.

Islam rejected allegations that defendants were being selected arbitrarily. Investigators work independently and prosecutors do not interfere, he said, adding that investigations are returned for further work when deficiencies or inconsistencies are found.

He said information on 509 July-related incidents had been documented nationwide. Cases with completed investigations are being submitted to the tribunal for trial in stages, he added.
