Rabbik Hasan, managing director (MD) of the historic Carew & Company Limited sugar mill, has outlined various plans to reduce losses at the factory, protect farmers’ interests and advance technologically. He disclosed the information while speaking to reporters Saturday around 11 a.m., after inspecting a demonstration plot belonging to local sugarcane farmer Shamim at the Jibannagar Uthali unit.

During the visit, MD Rabbik Hasan said losses at the sugar mill, one of Carew & Company’s main units, have been significantly reduced compared with previous periods. Pledging full support to farmers to ensure the supply and quality of sugarcane, the main raw material, he said the government has raised the price per quintal of sugarcane from 625 taka to 651 taka. Farmers will receive this higher price in the upcoming crushing season, he said. In addition, an experimental program to develop new sugarcane varieties is under way through 82 demonstration plots aimed at increasing yields.

Outlining the company’s overall financial picture, the MD said Carew & Company posted a net profit of about 1.65 billion taka in fiscal year 2025-26. Every unit except the sugar mill is profitable, he said, with the distillery unit earning 2.23 billion taka, the commercial farm 500,000 taka, and the experimental farm about 700,000 taka.

The company set a particular sales record with its organic fertilizer, “Sonar Dana.” Sales of this fertilizer brought in a profit of 14.7 million taka this year. Because it is highly effective at improving soil fertility, farmers in Chuadanga and surrounding areas are increasingly encouraged to use it.

Describing farmers as the country’s “lifeblood,” he expressed hope that combining modern technology with fair prices would put both farmers and the company on a path to prosperity. Also present at the event were Ashraful Alam Bhuiyan, general manager of Carew & Company’s agriculture division; Mahbubur Rahman, DGM (extension); Mahafuzul Alam, DM (extension); Saki Mahmud, CDA; and local sugarcane farmer Shamim Hossain.
