Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the electricity and gas crisis is a legacy of the past. He said the problem cannot be resolved within six months or a year — it will take two years. However, he said the government is not wasting any time in addressing the gas and electricity problems.

The finance minister made the remarks Sunday afternoon at a seminar organized by AmCham at the InterContinental Hotel in the capital. He said the country’s economy cannot move forward without electricity and gas, and that the government is working to resolve the crisis.

Saying the government is working tirelessly to resolve the crisis, he said an energy mix combining renewable energy, gas, and coal-based power is being developed for the country’s future energy system.

The finance minister said the government is working to improve the business environment by reducing red tape, corruption, and harassment within the tax system. He also said the country’s capital market is in a better position than before.
