The National Citizen Party (NCP) had called a protest programme in Habiganj against an attack on its July march there on Tuesday. The party’s leaders are already on their way to Habiganj to join it.
After the NCP announced the programme on Tuesday night, the BNP and Chhatra Dal announced programmes at the same place, and the administration imposed section 144 in Habiganj.
Although the administration has imposed section 144, NCP leaders are travelling there to hold the programme.
Among the central leaders taking part are the NCP convener and opposition chief whip in the national parliament, Nahid Islam, the southern region chief organiser, Hasnat Abdullah, and other senior leaders of the party.
Central leaders including Nasiruddin Patwari and Sarjis Alam are already there.
A member of the NCP’s media sub-committee, Yasir Arafat, said the party’s leaders were now very close to the venue.
Asked how they would hold the programme under section 144, Arafat said: “The next decision will be taken once the convener and the other central leaders reach there.”
The convoys carrying central leaders came under repeated attack on Tuesday during the NCP’s “July march” in Habiganj town and again as they were returning afterwards. Leaders and activists of the BNP and Chhatra Dal have been accused of the attacks.
Several central leaders including Sarjis Alam were later confined. They left Habiganj at night with the help of law enforcers.
Tension has prevailed in the district since section 144 was imposed after the NCP announced the new programme in Habiganj on Wednesday.
