Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned and criticised the Indian government’s role in allowing ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina to hold a news conference from India for anti-Bangladesh activity and “conspiracy.”
In a statement on Friday (7 August), Jamaat secretary general Mia Golam Parwar described India’s conduct as discourteous and a grave violation of international diplomatic norms.
In the statement, he said Bangladesh was committed to mutually respectful diplomatic relations on the basis of equal dignity with all countries, including neighbouring India, and to protecting bilateral interests, and that Bangladesh respected the independence and sovereignty of all countries. But a convicted fugitive such as Hasina engaging in conspiracy against the people of Bangladesh from Delhi, and the Indian government continuing to shelter her while ignoring Bangladesh’s diplomatic call to stop it, was a grave violation of international norms and diplomatic courtesy, he said. “We strongly condemn and protest such diplomatic conduct by the Indian government.”
Mia Golam Parwar said Hasina’s fascist government had, over the past 16 and a half years, carried out extreme oppression, killings and enforced disappearances against the people of Bangladesh, and in July-August 2024 had carried out mass killing of the patriotic people. About 1,500 people were killed and more than 30,000 injured in that mass killing, as reflected in reports by national and international media, the UN fact-finding mission, international rights commissions and others. Even so, Bangladesh’s interim government had written to the Indian government several times seeking her return. Ignoring that call and sheltering the fugitive Hasina, the Indian government appeared to be patronising the banned Awami League rather than Bangladesh, he said, while the existing bilateral extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh was also being ignored. “We expect the Indian government to correct its position and hand the convicted Hasina over to Bangladesh.”
He also said that although the second anniversary of the July uprising had been observed, the current government had failed to bring the “killer” Hasina back, so she was getting the chance to conspire against the country and its people from hiding. He called on the government to take effective steps to bring the fugitive Hasina back, arranging her return by issuing an Interpol red notice, and to seek the UN’s cooperation. If the government showed diplomatic slackness, it would have to face strict accountability before the people, he said.
Golam Parwar said the revolutionaries would not allow any fascism to be established, or old fascism to resurface or operate covertly, in the new Bangladesh won at the cost of thousands of lives in the 2024 uprising. Hasina’s attempt to cast a shadow of conspiracy over Bangladesh from India would not succeed, he said, calling on the freedom-loving people of Bangladesh to stay alert and united to resist the fascists’ conspiracy, and to come forward to uproot old fascism and build a united, just, corruption-free Bangladesh that is safe for all.
