Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has said: “Sheikh Hasina has said she will return to the country in December. I too want to believe that she will return in December, go to jail bearing responsibility for the mass killings, and walk the legal path.”
He made the remarks as chief guest on Friday morning at a discussion titled “Future Shailkupa” and a memorial for the late eminent artist Mustafa Monwar, at the Shailkupa upazila parishad auditorium in Jhenaidah.
The law minister said: “I have only one thing to say about Sheikh Hasina — we cannot deny that she murdered Bangladesh, we cannot deny that she was involved in killings, enforced disappearances and mass killing. If she wants to face all those truths, then she must come.”
The minister said: “My dream judiciary is one where a poor, helpless person can feel that, after the Creator, this is where they can place their trust and faith. That is the judiciary I want. There are still many problems in that judiciary.”
He added: “Your problem with the judiciary is one thing, mine is another. Some will say the judiciary is riddled with corruption, many will say it is riddled with fraudsters, many will say there is no structure. To me, the biggest crisis of the judiciary is a lack of judges with humane values. If I choose being a judge as a profession, I have to assume I have come to do a job like any other. Judges must remember: I have come here to establish justice, to exercise sovereign power granted by the Creator.”
The law minister said: “To those speaking so much about Hasina’s return, I say — put your hand on your heart once and tell me: after so many crimes, has she apologised to the people? Has it ever once occurred to Hasina that we committed a crime?”
Guests at the discussion and memorial included deputy commissioner Md Noman Hossain, police superintendent Mia Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan, Shailkupa upazila executive officer Md Mahfuzur Rahman and upazila BNP general secretary Humayun Babar Firoz.
