A status posted on the personal Facebook account of Jhalokathi-1 MP Rafiqul Islam Jamal has stirred widespread discussion and criticism in the district’s political circles.

By Friday morning, the status had spread widely on social media. According to local sources, within about 10 hours of being posted it had received more than 1,000 shares, about 1,300 comments and more than 5,000 reactions.

In the status, MP Rafiqul Islam Jamal sharply criticised the leaders and activists of Jhalokathi district BNP and its wings. He alleged that over the past six months some party leaders and activists had got involved in various activities for personal gain and had taken benefits by helping Awami League leaders and activists.

His status, reproduced verbatim: “I request the leaders and activists of Jhalokathi BNP and its wings to stop grabbing. You have eaten a lot in six months — eaten in exchange for guarding Awami League leaders and activists, eaten by pleading Awami League’s case, eaten by guarding Awami members’ homes, eaten by guarding contract work. In the end you are even eating by getting Awami members to join the party in exchange for money.”

He also wrote: “It seems you will devour the party itself. You should be ashamed. For the 36 July martyrs, in exchange for whose blood you got this chance to eat so much, you could not even hold a prayer on 5 August. You only want a post to become a leader. You will fall away from the party very soon.”

The status drew a strong reaction in Jhalokathi’s political circles as soon as it was posted, with leaders, activists and ordinary people expressing various opinions on social media.
