Amid tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, roughly 6,000 sailors are stranded aboard hundreds of vessels in the Gulf, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez said. He called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and de-escalate tensions, according to Al Jazeera.
In a statement, Dominguez condemned attacks on several vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz over the past two days, saying these attacks have put innocent sailors’ lives at serious risk. He said no sailor’s life should be endangered simply for doing their job.
The IMO chief called on flag states, ship owners and operators to avoid the Strait of Hormuz if sailors’ safety cannot be ensured.
He further said the recent attacks have deepened the fear, uncertainty and mental strain among the roughly 6,000 sailors unable to leave the Gulf. Dominguez stressed that sailors’ safety must be our top priority.
