Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has declared that all vessels must coordinate with it before transiting the Strait of Hormuz, ParsToday reported, citing the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
In a statement, the IRGC Navy said some unnamed “authorities” had unilaterally announced a new route for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz without first informing or coordinating with the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling the move “unacceptable and extremely dangerous.”
“We are informing everyone that the only authorised route through the Strait of Hormuz is the route announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Navigation outside these routes is extremely dangerous and prohibited, and we strongly warn against any movement beyond the declared routes,” the IRGC statement said, according to ParsToday.
The statement added: “Coordination with the IRGC Navy via Channel 16 is mandatory for transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Violators will face strict measures.”
The Strait of Hormuz, which separates Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most strategically important waterways, carrying approximately a fifth of global oil shipments. The claims in this report reflect Iran’s government position as reported by Iranian state media.
