France will stage a spectacular light show at New York’s Statue of Liberty to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, the French consulate said on Monday.

The “memorable work of art” will be recorded in advance and broadcast at the start of a 25-hour special on the ABC network on 4 July, US Independence Day, AFP reported from New York.

In a statement, the French consulate said: “The Statue of Liberty will be presented in a way the public has never seen before. This special staging has been arranged to make its symbolic and emotional significance shine even brighter.”

Cedric Fourcicaud, France’s consul in New York, told AFP: “Our history of friendship goes back 250 years. That relationship is still very strong and deep, so we wanted to do something special.”

France gave the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbour to the United States in 1886, and it is now one of the country’s most famous landmarks. To mark the 250th anniversary, France this month also sent its air force aerobatics team to the United States.

On 9 June, eight Alpha jets of the Patrouille de France painted the skies over Manhattan in the three colours of the French flag and flew over the Statue of Liberty.
