Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development has brought good news for expatriates in the country, extending until the end of this year the deadline for expatriate workers with problems in their work permits to regularise their status.

Gulf News reported the development on Tuesday.

The ministry said the decision would give employers and employees a little more time to complete the necessary legal and regulatory procedures.

The facility will apply only to expatriate workers whose work permits expired a year ago, or who have not had a work permit issued even six months after joining an establishment.

The ministry said the special step had been taken to enforce labour law strictly, protect the rights of all contracting parties, and give establishments and workers the chance to complete legal procedures. It also called on employers and workers to renew or issue work permits within the set deadline.

Saudi authorities warned that strict action would be taken under existing law against those who fail to issue work permits within the extended period. Riyadh has also decided to cap the number of immediate work visas for new establishments at a maximum of five.
