Upazila administration in Sadullapur, Gaibandha, has seized 72 sacks of fertilizer during a raid on the home of Shahin Sarkar, a former union parishad (UP) chairman. He has been fined in connection with the case.

Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jasim Uddin carried out the raid at Shahin Sarkar’s home in the Uttar Mandua area of the upazila on Tuesday morning.

Shahin Sarkar, 60, is the former chairman of Bangram Union Parishad in the upazila.

Upazila administration said the fertilizer, which had been illegally stockpiled, was seized during the raid. It included 13 sacks of urea, 28 sacks of gypsum, 16 sacks of DAP, 13 sacks of TSP and two sacks of potash fertilizer, with a combined market value of roughly 56,700 taka.

Shahin Sarkar, however, said: “We are marginal farmers. This fertilizer kept at home was not meant for sale or illegal stockpiling. It was being kept for use on transplanted Aman paddy land.”

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Jasim Uddin said strict legal action would be taken against anyone found illegally stockpiling fertilizer allocated for farmers or attempting to sell it at inflated prices.
