Mufti Amir Hamza, member of parliament for Kushtia-3 (Sadar), visited the home of Kushtia journalist Debashish Dutta, who was killed in a hotel fire in Kolkata, India, meeting with Dutta’s parents and his eight-year-old daughter to express his grief and condolences. He went to the home of the Kushtia journalist killed in the Kolkata fire. During the visit, Mufti Amir Hamza spoke with Debashish Dutta’s grieving family and expressed his deep condolences to them. He affectionately embraced the sole daughter left behind by journalist Debashish Dutta, offering her comfort.

During the visit, Mufti Amir Hamza also spoke about looking after the girl and taking on other responsibilities for her.

Around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, he visited journalist Debashish Dutta’s home in the city’s Aruapara area, met with family members and checked on their well-being. He assured the family of the journalist killed in the Kolkata fire that he would stand by them.

Speaking to reporters as he left, MP Amir Hamza said: “I came to see them, to meet them. I will look into whatever government assistance is available. Personally, I’ve spoken with the girl’s school principal, and we’re doing everything we can to look after her education. I’ll check on the family from time to time through my PA and my personal staff. We don’t see party, creed, nation or religion. Allah put us here for the welfare of people. So I’ll try to do whatever I can for their welfare.”

He further said: “God willing, I’m looking after the girl’s needs. Please pray that I’m able to do something for her. Looking at her, I feel terrible. Whether today or tomorrow, everyone must eventually depart this world. But this girl has been left completely helpless. I’ve spoken with her school principal, and I’ll arrange for her education to continue as far as it has gone. God willing, I’ll try to stand by her.”

It may be recalled that nine people were killed — from smoke inhalation and burns — in a fire at a residential hotel on Mirza Ghalib Street in the New Market area of Kolkata, India, in the early hours of Wednesday, August 19. Four members of this Kushtia family were among the dead.

The four members of the same Kushtia family were: Debashish Dutta, 37, acting editor of the daily Ajker Alo newspaper and Kushtia district correspondent for Ajker Patrika and Channel Nine; his wife, Afsana Shammi, 25; their two-year-old son; and Debashish’s father-in-law, Akram Ali, 64, a resident of Thanapara in Kushtia town.

Meanwhile, Jamaat district secretary Enamul Haque and other district leaders also rushed to the home. They expressed condolences to the grieving family.
