German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sharply condemned Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his call for the killing of 30 to 40 people a day in Gaza, Palestine. He described Ben-Gvir’s remarks as inhumane and a violation of international law.

German government deputy spokesperson Sebastian Hille disclosed this at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, August 19.

Hille said: “The chancellor has sharply condemned Ben-Gvir’s inhumane calls. These violate international law and are in no way acceptable.”

Hille said EU leaders had agreed, at a European Union (EU) summit this past June, on preparing sanctions against far-right politicians who take positions violating human dignity and international law.

He said EU foreign ministers would discuss the matter at an informal “Gymnich” meeting in the coming days. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign policy, would put forward proposals for possible action on the matter.

Ben-Gvir recently called, in a podcast, for intensifying Israeli attacks on Gaza further. He spoke of killing 30 to 40 people every night, and also reiterated demands for the resettlement of Israelis in Gaza. His remarks triggered widespread criticism across Europe, including in Germany and France.
