The discovery of the slaughtered heads, hides, legs, and bones of roughly a dozen horses inside a dense forest in Sreepur, Gazipur, has caused a stir in the area. Locals believe the horses were slaughtered and their meat taken elsewhere. Fear and anger have spread among residents over concerns that this meat may be sold mixed with beef.
Local residents discovered the horse heads, hides, and legs scattered inside a dense forest in the Nayapara and Gaziardon villages of Bormi union in the upazila early Monday, August 17. As word spread, curious crowds gathered at the scene.
Local resident Azizul said: “I’ve never seen anything like this in my life. I can’t understand what kind of people would do this.”
Sumon Pradhan, union parishad member for Ward 1 of Gosinga union, said he went to the scene after learning about it from locals early in the morning. He saw several horse heads and bones scattered there. He demanded that those responsible for slaughtering the horses be identified and brought to justice.
Local residents allege that the horses were slaughtered and the meat taken elsewhere. They believe the meat may have been supplied to nearby restaurants or sold mixed with beef. However, the accuracy of these allegations could not be immediately confirmed.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahinur Alam said: “Locals informed me that a number of horses had been slaughtered inside the forest. After learning of this, police were sent to the scene. The forest officer and upazila executive officer have also been informed.”
Sreepur Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Md Ashraf Hossain said: “I’m heading to the scene with a team. We will try to find out who is responsible. If those involved are identified, legal action will be taken against them.”
He further said arrangements would be made to bury the horse heads, hides, and other remains found in the forest.
The incident has raised various questions among locals. Residents have demanded an investigation into where the horses came from, who slaughtered them, and where the meat was taken, to uncover the true circumstances.
