U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized Israel’s military operation in Lebanon. Speaking at a bilateral meeting with the Emir of Qatar on the sidelines of the ongoing G7 summit in France, he said Israel had been fighting Hezbollah “for a long time” and that “too many people are dying” as a result of the conflict.
He added that Israel could not carry out the task of suppressing Hezbollah without killing everyone else. Trump said there was no justification for destroying an entire residential high-rise on the pretext of searching for a single Hezbollah member.
Pointing to the Israeli forces’ assault tactics, he said: “There is no need to flatten an entire apartment building to the ground every time to find someone. Because many ordinary people live in those buildings — and they are not all members of Hezbollah.”
Trump also raised a new diplomatic proposal to resolve the crisis. He said that giving Syria, rather than Israel, the responsibility for suppressing Hezbollah could be more effective.
Trump said: “I advised Israel to let Syria handle the Hezbollah issue. Frankly, I think Syria can do this job much more precisely and effectively.”
According to analysts, the president’s remarks reflected a degree of unease within the U.S. administration over the civilian deaths caused by Israel’s indiscriminate airstrikes in Lebanon. Even so, despite his sharp comments, Trump noted that his relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remained excellent.
