Ex-army major detained over 1981 killing of President Ziaur Rahman

Former major Md Mozaffar Hossain has been detained in connection with the assassination of former president Ziaur Rahman. He had reportedly been a fugitive for 45 years.

Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner (Detective Branch) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter at a quarter to 4 on Thursday afternoon.

He said the man had been detained from Banani DOHS in the capital.

Former president Ziaur Rahman was killed in the pre-dawn hours of 30 May 1981 at the Chattogram Circuit House, 45 years ago. Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the BNP, had gone to Chattogram the previous day to settle a local party dispute.

Md Mozaffar Hossain was a major in the army at the time. He fled after the killing, and a reward had been announced at the time for his capture.
