Bangladesh’s 55th budget was announced Thursday under the leadership of BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tareque Rahman. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in a session of Parliament on Thursday.

Before the prime minister, national budgets were also drawn up and implemented under the leadership of his father, the late President Ziaur Rahman, and his mother, the late Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. Besides leading, Ziaur Rahman himself also presented a budget. Under their leadership, 17 budgets have so far been presented during BNP’s time in power.

Six budgets were announced under the leadership of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman. Of these, he himself presented three as head of government. The other three were presented under his leadership. After coming to power in 1976, Ziaur Rahman held charge of the finance ministry. He presented a budget on June 26 that year. At the time, the size of the budget was 1,867 crore and 87 lakh taka. Of this, revenue was 966 crore and 38 lakh taka. The deficit was 901 crore and 49 lakh taka. Of the three budgets presented during Ziaur Rahman’s tenure as president, the first was announced by Finance Minister Mirza Nurul Huda and the next two by M. Saifur Rahman.

During the tenure of Ziaur Rahman’s wife, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, M. Saifur Rahman, as finance minister in two terms, presented 10 more budgets.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tareque Rahman, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year on Thursday. The budget has been set at 9 lakh 38 thousand crore taka. Against this, the revenue target has been set at 6 lakh 95 thousand crore taka.
