Border Guard detains man with gold bars worth 1 crore 10 lakh taka in Jashore

Border Guard Bangladesh detained a man with five gold bars worth about 1 crore 10 lakh 47 thousand 231 taka while he was allegedly attempting to smuggle them into India through the Benapole border, officials said.

The man was detained at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Laujani Gazi Dargah area on the Jashore-Benapole highway.

Lt. Col. Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan, commander of Jashore 49 BGB, said a team was searching vehicles after receiving a tip when it detained the man from a bus bound for Benapole.

Officials said a body search recovered five gold bars weighing 529.64 grams. During preliminary questioning, the detainee said he had collected the bars in Dhaka and was taking them to India through the Benapole border, according to BGB.

A case has been filed and the detainee was handed to Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station, BGB said. The allegations remain subject to legal process.
