A 16-year-old schoolgirl whose body was found stuffed in a sack in the Nirala Prantika area of Khulna died of severe head injuries and heavy bleeding after being struck with a stick by her father, Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) said. Police said the killing stemmed from a family dispute.
KMP Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Hasan gave the account at a news conference at police headquarters on Saturday (July 11). The girl’s mother gave a confessional statement before a court on Friday under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, describing the killing, he said.
According to police, the girl had argued with family members on the afternoon of the incident, and her mother slapped her. Hearing the commotion, her father came to the room and at one point struck her on the head with a wooden stick, and she died on the spot from excessive bleeding. The parents then put the body in a plastic sack, wrapped it and dumped it by motorcycle on a road in the Nirala Prantika residential area, police said.
Residents saw the sack in front of a seven-story building at around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and informed police, who recovered the body and sent it to the Khulna Medical College morgue. Within 24 hours, police identified the girl as a tenth-grade student at a Khulna school and a resident of the Basupara area of Sonadanga.
The girl’s mother initially gave misleading information when questioned but later admitted her involvement and subsequently made the confessional statement in court, the commissioner said. Preliminary investigation indicated the killing had grown out of a long-running family dispute, he added, though the investigation was continuing.
The mother was arrested within 36 hours of the incident, while the girl’s father, the prime accused, remains absconding, police said. A special team led by Deputy Police Commissioner (South) Md. Rezaur Rahman is continuing the investigation and efforts to arrest him.
