NEW DELHI, Sept. 26 — In India’s Nagaland, 19 people died in two districts over two days after drinking toxic liquor. Several others fell ill. Police arrested 19 people suspected of involvement in the incident.

News agency PTI reported that eight people died in Mokokchung district, while 11 died in Tuensang district. A committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

A law banning liquor in the state was introduced in 1989, but the prohibition took effect in April 1990. Police are investigating how liquor is still being smuggled into the state.

Anandabazar Online, citing sources, reported that about three thousand bottles of liquor were seized during raids.
