Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will visit India in September to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi, according to Iranian government sources cited on Friday, Aug 14.
Indian media reported that Pezeshkian’s visit is being viewed as particularly significant. The Iranian president previously met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, when the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues.
Iran became a full member of BRICS in 2024, at the same time as Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. With Indonesia joining in 2025, BRICS now has 11 full members.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited India in June to attend a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers.
At a press conference after the meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi said India’s influence in establishing global peace was steadily growing, and that it could play a larger role in easing instability in West Asia.
Saying Iran saw no future in armed conflict, Araghchi said there was no military solution to the current crisis and that a negotiated settlement was the only workable path.
He also made Tehran’s interest in Indian mediation clear. “We would welcome any constructive role by India,” Araghchi said.
Araghchi also met Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during that visit, telling him that friendly countries could place their trust in Iran on commercial security.
India holds the BRICS chair in 2026 and will host the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi this year, having taken over the chair from Brazil earlier in the year.
