Police have detained four people with yaba and drug paraphernalia in a room of the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) guest house. They were detained from room 6 in a joint raid by the university administration and police on Tuesday night (September 29). One of them is a university employee.
According to the proctor’s office, the four are Labib Hasan Mithun, a third-class employee of the university’s agribusiness and marketing department, and outsiders Samiul Alim, Samiul Ibne Ashikur Rahman and Soad. Yaba and drug paraphernalia were recovered from them. Police at the scene said some of the yaba had been flushed down the toilet in an attempt to destroy it during the raid. Mymensingh Kotwali police later took them into custody.
Assistant Professor Dr Aniruddha Sarkar, officer-in-charge of the guest house, said staff told him about their suspicious movements. Room 6 was booked in the name of Mithun, a staff member of the agricultural economics and rural sociology faculty, and strangers had been seen coming and going, parking motorcycles and moving about suspiciously.
Other guests were staying at the guest house, so to avoid any untoward situation they went to the room quickly with the proctorial vigilance team, he said. When the door was opened, four people were inside: the staff member who had booked it, an AC mechanic and two strangers. There was a strong smell in the room and their behaviour seemed abnormal. Police then searched the bathroom and seized a kit with four or five yaba tablets.
Guest house authorities said Labib Hasan Mithun had rented room 6 for one day three days earlier, citing special reasons related to illness, and then stayed there for three days.
Proctor Professor Dr Md Abdul Alim said he was told at 7:45pm that a university staff member was staying in the guest house room with some outsiders. Camp police and proctorial body members went there, and Kotwali police were also informed. After being called several times from outside, they opened the door within about five to 10 minutes. Inside there was a bad smell and yaba paraphernalia was visible, and police then recovered yaba and detained them. Action will be taken against them under the law, he said.
Sub-inspector Mahbub of Kotwali police station said the four had been detained and were being taken to the police station, and the necessary legal action would be taken.
Assistant proctor Assistant Professor Dr Md Masud Rana said the university administration now follows a “zero tolerance” policy on drugs, and the necessary action will be taken against drugs in every area of the campus, including residential halls.
