Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said Bangladesh’s new democratic government is committed to further deepening and strengthening a partnership of mutual respect, sovereignty, equality, and peace and prosperity in bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China.
The commerce minister made the remarks Friday as chief guest at the inauguration of “Bangladesh Day” on the second day of the China-South Asia Expo, held at a local hotel in Kunming, the capital of China’s Yunnan province.
Khandaker Muktadir said the current government is working sincerely to build a sustainable relationship from which the people of both countries can benefit in real and direct terms. A reflection of that, he said, is the record number of Bangladeshi firms taking part in this year’s fair.
He said: “Today is a special day for us, because we are celebrating ‘Bangladesh Day’ in the hospitable and warm city of Kunming. Being able to celebrate ‘Bangladesh Day’ on Chinese soil is a shining example of the deep friendship and mutual trust between our two countries, nurtured and developed year after year.”
He also said: “We proudly describe our country as ‘Destination Bangladesh – a unique land of possibilities.’ This is not merely a slogan; rather, it is an open invitation.” He called on Yunnan’s business community to invest in Bangladesh and to import more goods from the country.
On the second day of the fair, the minister also visited the Bangladesh pavilion’s stalls as well as notable stalls of all the participating countries.
As part of the “Bangladesh Day” celebration, a seminar on “Bangladesh – Sourcing with Quality and Competitiveness” was held Friday at the same venue. Mohammad Hasan Arif, vice chairman and chief executive of the Export Promotion Bureau, spoke as the keynote speaker. Speakers in the discussion included the commercial counselor posted in China, a representative of the Yunnan provincial commerce department, a representative of the Bangladesh-China Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and a representative of the Bangladesh Footwear and Leather Goods Association. Leaders and representatives of business organizations from Bangladesh and China, and government and private-sector officials from the two countries, attended the seminar.
The “10th China-South Asia Expo and 30th China Kunming Import and Export Fair 2026” began on June 11 and will run until June 16. About 2,300 exhibitors from 68 countries are taking part in the international fair. Organized by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and supported by the Bangladesh Consulate in Kunming, this year’s fair drew a record 175 representatives from 101 Bangladeshi firms. The Bangladesh pavilion is showcasing products from the country’s main export sectors, including ready-made garments, textiles, pharmaceuticals, jute and jute goods, leather goods, plastic products and handicrafts.
Also speaking at the event were Bangladesh’s Ambassador to China Md. Nazmul Islam; Yunnan Vice Governor Liu Yang; Li Yi, deputy director general of the Yunnan provincial commerce department; Mohammad Hasan Arif, vice chairman and chief executive of the Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau; and Liu Qilin, president of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
Also present were Bangladesh’s Consul General in Kunming, senior officials of Bangladesh’s commerce ministry and the EPB, business leaders accompanying the commerce minister, and representatives of business organizations from Bangladesh and China.
