A woman was returning home by rickshaw with her only daughter after getting off a bus when two helmeted snatchers passed by on a motorcycle. The man sitting at the back of the motorcycle suddenly grabbed the handbag wrapped around the woman’s hand and began tugging at it. At one point she fell from the moving rickshaw. Her right arm was broken and she suffered a serious injury to the back of her head. Blood began to flow from her ear. With the help of several local people, her daughter then admitted her to a hospital.

The incident occurred last Sunday at about 6:15 a.m. in front of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. Four days later, while undergoing treatment, she died at a hospital on Thursday.

The woman’s home was in the Sahebpara area of Parbatipur upazila in Dinajpur. She worked as a medical service officer at the pharmaceutical company SKF. She lived in a rented house near Green Road in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi. She died Thursday morning at a private hospital in Dhanmondi. She was buried in the afternoon at her maternal home in the West Tengri area of Ishwardi upazila in Pabna. Her only daughter, a undergraduate student at Bangladesh Home Economics College, has been left devastated by the death.

The woman’s uncle, Sarwar Parvez, said she had come to Parbatipur with her daughter for a family event a few days earlier. After the event, she set out for Dhaka on a 9 p.m. bus last Saturday (June 6). She got off in the Gabtoli area at 5 a.m. on Sunday and waited at the counter. About an hour later, she set out for home by rickshaw. She was attacked by snatchers just after passing the gate of Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital.

Sarwar Parvez also said she had divorced about a decade and a half ago, and her life of struggle began after that. Her father died about two years ago, and her mother died two months later. Now she, too, has gone, leaving her only daughter alone.

The woman’s brother-in-law, Tariqul Islam, said the back of her head split open when she fell from the rickshaw, and she was bleeding heavily. She sought help from many people, but at first no one came forward. Later, with the help of the rickshaw puller and another person, she was taken to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. From there she was taken to the National Institute of Neurosciences and Hospital, and then to a private hospital. By then it was already too late. She could not speak and only moaned, he said. He said no case had yet been filed with police over the incident, and that legal steps would be taken once the situation calmed somewhat.
