Two jailed and fined for trapping egrets in Pirganj

Two young men have been sentenced to one year’s simple imprisonment each and fined Tk 500 each, or 15 more days in jail in default, for illegally trapping egrets in Pirganj, Thakurgaon. Upazila nirbahi officer and executive magistrate Golam Rabbani Sardar handed down the sentences at a mobile court on Thursday afternoon. The convicts are Rafiqul Islam and Sakib Islam of Chapaitor village in Setabganj upazila, Dinajpur.

Pirganj forest beat officer Mohsin Ali said the two had illegally trapped 15 egrets with snares in Nizampur beel beside Kalo Pir bazar in Pirganj upazila on Thursday morning. Forest department staff detained them after being informed, and the upazila nirbahi officer sentenced them under the Wildlife Conservation and Security Act 2026 at a mobile court. The captured egrets were released into the open sky.

Pirganj police station OC Iqbal Hossain Pramanik said the two convicts have been sent to Thakurgaon jail.
