A reception has been held in Narail to honour 130 high-achieving students from various public universities and medical and engineering universities, organised by the Usha’r Alo Surjo Songho.

At the event, held on Saturday (May 30) afternoon at the Sadar upazila parishad auditorium, the chief guest was Salauddin Ammar, general secretary (GS) of the Rajshahi University central student council.

In his speech he said: “Do not do politics in the hope of seat trading or winning the favour of some leader. Move forward on your own; that will improve your position. There is no need to shout yourself hoarse marching for a leader. After finishing university, it is not right to hope only to become a BCS cadre or an administration magistrate. First you need to become a good and humane person.”

“Many private jobs or entrepreneurs earn more than a magistrate,” he added. “Above all, everyone must become a good and humane person and move forward in whatever direction they feel comfortable.”

Addressing the new students, Salauddin Ammar said universities offer every kind of opportunity alongside studies — science clubs, debating clubs, and literary and cultural practice — but that there are bad sides too. “Many become addicted to drugs after coming here and go astray. So you must build yourselves with care, and you must not ruin your life by falling in love at a young age. If you use university life properly, it is possible to build yourself into a capable and good person.”

The event was chaired by Usha’r Alo Surjo Songho president, young poet and columnist Minhajul Islam, and conducted by general secretary Shafayat Ullah. The chief speaker was Dr Akbar Mahmud, former dean of the theology faculty of Islamic University, Kushtia.

Special guests included Dr Sayem Ali Khan, head of the political science department of Narail Government Victoria College; noted Islamic thinker Maulana Alamgir Hussain; Narail Press Club general secretary Mahbubur Rashid Lablu; and BUET student Sheikh Imtiaz, among others.

The 130 high-achieving students from the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 academic years were presented with honour crests, certificates and floral greetings. The social and voluntary organisation Usha’r Alo Surjo Songho honours Narail’s outstanding students every year.
