SYEDPUR — The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested three named accused in the dowry-related beating death of a 31-year-old woman in Syedpur, Nilphamari, including her husband.

RAB said it continues to conduct regular operations against serious and high-profile crimes, including murder, abduction, rape, and dowry violence, with a special focus on preventing violence against women and children.

According to the complaint filed by the victim’s family, Mosammat Shimu Akter, 31, married accused No. 1, Md. Raihan Ritu, 30, about 13 years ago, in 2013, under Islamic shariah. From the time of the marriage, Raihan Ritu had subjected the victim to mental and physical abuse over dowry demands. As the victim’s family was unable to pay, the abuse escalated.

On the morning of April 9, 2026, around 8 a.m., the accused, with the help of others, beat the victim severely at his home, the complaint said. To cover up the incident, the accused then forced poison into the victim’s mouth and admitted her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. She died there while undergoing treatment at 8:45 p.m. on April 10, 2026.

The victim’s father filed a case at Syedpur police station in Nilphamari district on April 12, 2026, under Sections 11(ka)/30 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 (Case No. 12).

The killing caused widespread outrage in the area and was widely covered in the media. Given the seriousness of the case, RAB-13 stepped up intelligence surveillance and intensified its operations to arrest the suspects quickly.

An operational team from RAB-13, CPC-2, Nilphamari camp, conducted a raid at 2:30 p.m. on April 19, 2026, in the Dhalagachh Motir Mor area under Syedpur police station in Nilphamari district. Three suspects were arrested: accused No. 1, fugitive Md. Raihan Ritu, 30, son of the late Morshed; accused No. 3, Md. Jasim, 32, son of Md. Salim; and accused No. 4, Md. Jitu, 34, son of the late Morshedul Haque — all of Syedpur, Nilphamari.

The accused admitted involvement in the killing during initial interrogation, RAB said.

The arrested suspects have been handed over to the relevant police station for further legal action.

RAB said its operations to suppress dowry violence, murder, abduction, rape, and other crimes will continue.
