A woman has died among five members of one family who were burned in an explosion caused by a gas leak in Narayanganj’s Madanpur. Sultana Akhtar, 42, died of her injuries, a hospital doctor said.

She died Friday afternoon, June 12, around 1:30 p.m. while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

Confirming the death, Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the Burn Institute, told reporters that about 90 percent of Sultana Akhtar’s body had been burned.

He said Ali Ahmad Mannan was currently admitted to the hospital with 30 percent burns and the couple’s son Siyam with 77 percent burns. A child of the family was burned over 41 percent of the body. A passer-by, a boy who suffered burns over 8 percent of his body, was given primary treatment and released, he said.

The accident took place earlier, around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, in the Chhotbagh area of Madanpur.

Those burned were vegetable trader Ali Ahmad Mannan, 50; his wife, garment worker Sultana Akhtar, 42; their son, college student Siyam, 19; their daughter, a school student, 9; and a passer-by, a boy, 8.

Relatives of the burned said the family lived as tenants in a single-storey house in Madanpur. With a leak in the home’s gas stove line, Ali Ahmad Mannan repaired it himself. Shortly after his wife lit the stove to cook, an explosion went off with a loud bang. The couple, their two children and a child passing by were burned.

Locals later rescued them and admitted them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
