The Maheshpur upazila unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Jhenaidah district held a large human chain in protest at abnormal rises in the prices of fuel oil, gas and electricity, a severe fertiliser shortage, and partisanship in the appointment of fertiliser dealers and family card supervisors.
The human chain was held on the upazila premises on Monday, 19 October 2026, against price rises for essentials including fuel, gas and electricity, the fertiliser shortage and partisanship in various government sectors. The chief guest was Md Matiar Rahman, member of parliament for Jhenaidah-3 (Maheshpur-Kotchandpur). The special guest was Principal Maulana Abdul Hai, assistant secretary of Jhenaidah district Jamaat and a candidate for upazila chairman in the coming election. People from all walks of life joined the human chain, which stretched from the upazila premises to the post office crossing.
In his speech as chief guest, MP Matiar Rahman said the people of Bangladesh want to live on two handfuls of rice twice a day, and are content when their minimum basic needs are met. But the government now in office has completely failed to meet people’s basic needs and is following in the footsteps of the autocratic government of the past, he said. Rising prices of essentials, including fuel, gas and electricity, have made ordinary life hard. Just as the previous government took the country towards one-party rule through partisanship, the current government is heading the same way, he said.
In his speech as special guest, Maulana Abdul Hai called on the people to rise up in the present situation in Bangladesh and urged the administration to remain neutral. Otherwise, he said, the government would have to take responsibility for whatever happened in the face of a popular surge.
Others who spoke included Md Faruk Ahmed, ameer of the Maheshpur upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami; upazila secretary Ismail Hossain Palash; members of the working council; Md Lutfor Rahman, president of the Adarsha Press Club and head of the media department; and Md Noufel Hossain, ameer of the Maheshpur municipal unit. The human chain was moderated by Ismail Hossain Palash, secretary of the Maheshpur upazila unit.
