A Hindu man in Mohanganj, Netrokona, has been accused of converting to Islam and changing his name before marrying a young Muslim woman, then living with her for eight years under that identity. His first wife, Shipul Akter Khanam, has filed a fraud case in court against Arjun Dhar Hira, alias Hira Mia, alleging that after the birth of their two children, he reverted to Hinduism and married another Hindu woman. The case also names Arjun’s mother, Krishna Rani Ghosh, as an accused. The court has accepted the case and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Mosharraf Hossain Shuvo, confirmed the matter Tuesday. Shipul had filed the case earlier, on July 20, at Netrokona Sadar Magistrate’s Court. PBI Sub-Inspector Md Zaman Ali said the investigation is under way and a report will be submitted to the court once it is complete.
According to the case’s allegations and local sources, Arjun Dhar Hira once lived in the Doulatpur area of Mohanganj municipal town, where he and Shipul developed a romantic relationship. He later converted to Islam through an affidavit in 2014 and took the name Md Hira Mia, after which he married Shipul. The couple had a daughter in 2015 and a son in 2022.
The plaintiff alleges that while presenting himself as Muslim, Hira also prayed and fasted, but repeatedly avoided registering their marriage (kabin) under various pretexts. After their second child was born, she alleges, he reverted to Hinduism at his mother Krishna Rani’s urging. He then secretly married another Hindu woman. When Shipul confronted him about it, she alleges she was beaten and psychologically abused over dowry demands.
The case further states that Shipul filed a complaint with the district Legal Aid office on May 20, 2025, seeking redress. With both parties’ consent, a settlement agreement and affidavit were subsequently executed through a notary public on June 4. The agreement included conditions such as covering the children’s education costs and buying land to build a house, but Shipul alleges these were never fulfilled.
Shipul said her husband and mother-in-law took advantage of her good faith to deceive her. She said she is anxious about her two children’s paternal identity and future.
Asked about the allegations, Arjun Dhar Hira said he had divorced Shipul long ago, and that what he did afterward was not Shipul’s concern. He then hung up the phone.
