Police have arrested nine people, including the main suspect, over the snatching of a detainee from police custody, obstruction of government work, injuring police officers and vandalising government property in Darshana, Chuadanga.
Various units of Chuadanga district police arrested them in joint raids on the night of September 30 and on October 1, recovering nine bamboo sticks and two sickles left at the scene by the attackers.
The arrested are Abu Siddique, 70, Laxman, 38, Firoz Hossain, 19, Farhad Hossain, 19, Sonali Haldar, 30, Kona Rani, 25, Nasima Begum, 40, Alam Badsha, 55, and Phulon Haldar, 32, all residents of Chandipur Purbapara under Darshana police station.
Police said a team led by Darshana police sub-inspector Molla Ariful Islam carried out an operation in front of the Sarbajanin Sri Sri Durga temple in Chandipur Purbapara at around 8:30pm on September 30, where some people were trying to cause disorder, and detained Abu Siddique. As he was being taken to the police station, a group of locals attacked the police, vandalised a police motorcycle, injured two officers and forcibly freed him.
Soon afterwards, under the direction of Chuadanga Superintendent of Police Mehedi Shahriar, the District Detective Branch (DB), the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) and Darshana police carried out a joint combing operation in Chandipur and arrested eight people involved. Continuing the drive, police arrested the main suspect, Abu Siddique, who had fled, near the Chuadanga Sadar bus stand on October 1.
Darshana police said a regular case has been filed against those involved, and the arrested have been sent to court after legal procedures. The district police’s tough drive to keep law and order normal and curb criminals will continue.
