India’s Rashtrapati Bhavan (President’s House) has withdrawn a notice hinting at preparations for a Delhi visit by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tareque Rahman, shortly after publishing it.
A press release issued by India’s Rashtrapati Bhavan around 2:00 p.m. local time said the “Change of Guard” ceremony would not be held in the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt on Saturday, August 22.
The release said the decision was made because a full rehearsal was under way in preparation for the formal reception of Bangladesh’s prime minister.
The release, headlined “No Change of Guard Ceremony This Saturday,” said the Change of Guard ceremony would not take place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt on Saturday because of the full rehearsal for the formal reception of Bangladesh’s prime minister. However, neither New Delhi nor Dhaka had, up to that point, formally announced Tareque Rahman’s potential visit to India. Shortly afterward, the notice was withdrawn by India’s Rashtrapati Bhavan.
A new statement sent by the office of India’s president around 3:00 p.m. said the press release titled “No Change of Guard Ceremony This Saturday,” published on August 21, 2026, was being withdrawn.
Formal receptions are held at Rashtrapati Bhavan for foreign heads of state and other important guests on state visits to Delhi. This is an important part of India’s military and diplomatic tradition.
The ceremony, held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt, typically includes a guard of honor formed jointly by the three services, the national anthem, and a formal introduction of the guest to India’s president and prime minister.
