Bad politics will never again be allowed to return to the Dhaka University campus, former DU Chhatra Shibir president and DUCSU vice-president Sadiq Kayem said firmly. He made the comment at a brief gathering after Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir held a “Catch the League” marathon on the campus on Friday (17 July) to mark “Terrorism Resistance Day.” The organisation held the event to remember the day in 2024 when the campus and every residential hall became free of the extremist Chhatra League.

Setting out the event’s purpose, Sadiq Kayem said: “We want to send a clear message — the dark, bad politics of the Chhatra League that once ruled this campus through fascist politics, the unjust flexing of power, and the brutal torture of ordinary students used like slaves in the name of ‘gono room’ and ‘guest room’, will never be allowed to return here.” He said the marathon aimed to build strong social resistance among students and raise awareness across society, and urged those active in student politics never again to engage in the dirty politics of muscle power but to lead in building knowledge-based, principled and healthy student politics.

Alongside the marathon, a three-day photo exhibition and cultural programme titled “Bloody July” began at DU on Friday as part of the announced “36-day programme” running through July, depicting the sacrifice of the martyrs of the July uprising, its core aspirations, the courageous role of women in the movement and the historic contribution of the ulama.
