White House launches its own streaming channel

The administration of US President Donald Trump has launched a 24-hour video streaming platform, Trump TV. Trump TV: The Essentials Station, launched on the White House’s own initiative, will carry important speeches, events, videos and footage of the administration’s activities, live and continuously.

Through the platform, launched on Monday, the White House said there would be a chance to watch the administration’s big moments, important speeches and selected videos from one place 24 hours a day. The White House also said the platform would be updated in real time.

Trump TV has been launched at a time of sharp conflict between the Trump administration and several major American news outlets. Last week, journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico had their White House access withdrawn. In response, those three outlets filed suit against the Trump administration in federal court on Monday. They allege that the ban on them violates the protection of press freedom in the First Amendment to the US constitution.

Trump has defended his position against the news outlets. Describing their reporting as fake news, he has questioned the need to give them access to the White House. The administration has also said that access to the White House is a privilege, not a right.

A crisis has meanwhile arisen in the conventional press pool of American television news outlets. CNN, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC normally record video of the president’s various engagements and share that footage among themselves. After CNN was removed from press pool duty, the other networks also decided to suspend pool coverage of the president’s engagements temporarily.

As a result, there was no live video coverage by the conventional television press pool at President Trump’s opening of the new White House helipad on Monday either. The event was broadcast on the White House’s own social media and website.

Trump TV’s first broadcast showed older speeches by Trump and footage of important moments for the administration. The broadcast opened with a trailer on Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, followed by his July 3 speech at Mount Rushmore.

With the launch of the White House’s own broadcasting arrangement, the administration now has a direct channel for carrying the president’s statements and government activity to the public. At the same time, the development has brought the continuing argument in the United States over government communication, the president’s relationship with the press and the role of independent journalism further to the fore. The legal process in the courts on this is also continuing.
